The true origins of golf (as it is called today) are not truly known, but what is known that by the 15th century this game was widely played throughout Europe. The rules of the game played today vary totally compared to the early form of golf, but the principles remain the same, in simple terms knocking the ball from a set area to another set area in the least number of blows. The other constant in this game is that it was played by common people and lords and ladies alike.
It is said that in Scotland the name golf was first pronounced gowf and because the game was so widespread an Act of Parliament was passed to stop the people playing on Sundays, it has been said that the reason for this act was to preserve the skills of Archery. The fact may be clear that in those early days the people of Leith, St Andrews and Aberdeen by using the cleek and a ball on the sandy links land may have started the popular game of golf that we now know and love today.
The people of Scotland today still firmly believe that all those years ago on the eastern side of Scotland on the links land is where the game first started; it is with pride for over five hundred years that this truly wonderful game has been nurtured. After the humble beginning the game is loved and played by millions of people all over the world.
History of golf in America is perhaps a different story they may not have been totally responsible for helping to win the war, they are perhaps the winners when it came to winning the battle of post war golf. It could be said that they didn't experience economic and social upheaval, whatever story may be told golfers of America certainly have set a high standard following the war years.
